In 2009, Toronto’s Volcano Theatre accepted an invitation perform Goodness, a play about genocide, in Rwanda. Made by the artists themselves, the film presents an unfiltered look at the political delicacy and emotional rawness of mounting ‘Goodness’ in Rwanda. This 64 minute documentary is part road movie, part performance movie, and all fish out of water story. The film takes the viewer into the quirky and heartbreaking world of a naive theatre troupe representing Canada in a deeply wounded country. We follow them to a struggling theatre festival where, surrounded by Rwanda’s horrific history, they attempt to connect with its people. An emotional raw movie about storytelling, the nature of evil and the reality of forgiveness. It affords us a chance to look at our own collective guilt in the face of atrocity and our need to affect change. In our unbalanced world, there will always be room for hope.

Each screening followed by a panel discussion, guests TBC.
6:15 pm – Film: How do we tell our own stories?
8 pm – PeaceBuilding: The Ethics of Reconciliation.
9:45 pm – Arts in Action: Post-Conflict Healing.

Even though I walked away from the trip with more questions than answers, I hope the film does its part in honestly exploring how one part of the world can relate to another part of the world. And I hope to suggest – with my naïveté as my shield – that this difficult, halting, and sometimes embarrassing conversation is the first, essential step toward greater understanding. —Gord Rand
